PA1012-55 - LWWMD GROWING GREENER PROJECT

During March and early April, we continued with basic maintenance, including battery charging, rain gage clean-out, etc.  We conducted stormflow sampling for two larger storms and one smaller storm.  Valid samples were collected at most stations for the two larger events.  The smaller event produced insufficient runoff to produce valid samples at all stations.

The extremely heavy rains associated with the two larger storm events produced high flows and flooding which caused damages at the West Branch Wallenpaupack Creek station.  Insufficient battery charge at the Purdy Creek station resulted in incomplete sampling and invalid samples.  The low battery condition at the Purdy Creek station occurred as the solar panel was stolen at some point since the prior month’s sampling and maintenance.  All valid stormflow samples were collected at the stations, and were immediately composited and analyzed for all prescribed water quality parameters.

Data from all stations were downloaded weekly (at a minimum).  Upon download, the data were entered into their respective databases created by the Flowlink 4.15 software.  All data were analyzed immediately upon download to ensure that the stations were working properly.  February data for all stations were added to the respective calculations spreadsheets created for this project.

PA1012-63 – 2005 GENERAL ENGINEERING

During the month of March 2005, F. X. PA1012-64  2005 LAKE WALLENPAUPACK WATER QUALITY MONITORING PROJECT

F. X. Browne, Inc. coordinated the March and April 2005 sampling events for Lake Wallenpaupack.  On March 2, 2005 and April 13, 2005, we collected surface, middle, and bottom water samples for chemical analysis at Station #3.  In addition, we collected photic zone composite samples for chlorophyll a and phytoplankton analyses.  We also collected temperature and dissolved oxygen profile data at 1 meter intervals from the surface to the bottom.  The water column was completely mixed, as evidenced by the thermal and dissolved oxygen profiles.  We then transported all samples to our laboratory in Marshalls Creek and analyzed them for total phosphorus, dissolved reactive phosphorus, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, nitrate/nitrite nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, total suspended solids, alkalinity (surface samples only), and pH.

A summary of the water quality data for March and April 2005 is provided in Appendix A.
