PA1012-55 - LWWMD GROWING GREENER PROJECT

During September and early October, we continued with basic maintenance, including battery charging, rain gage clean-out, etc.  We monitored weather conditions to identify potential storm events.  We conducted a site visit to each sampling station to lower the enable points of the samplers to account for the low flows in the stream.  We collected samples on October 7-10 at all stations except for the Purdy Creek Station.  We reset the samplers so they are ready for the next rain event. The samples were taken to our laboratory for analysis.  Two dead trees fell on the Purdy Creek Station during the Oct. 7-10 sampling event.  We removed the trees and repaired the stream station.  The station was not damaged and is now operational.  On October 14th we pulled the samplers at the Main Stem and West Branch Stations as a protective measure against potential flooding.  These stations were reinstalled on October 17th and are now functional.

Data from all stations were downloaded weekly (at a minimum).  Upon download, the data were entered into their respective databases created by the Flowlink 4.15 software.  All data were analyzed immediately upon download to ensure that the stations were working properly.

F. X. Browne , Inc. coordinated the September 2005 sampling events for Lake Wallenpaupack .  On September 12, 2005 we collected surface, middle, and bottom water samples for chemical analysis at Station #3, and on September 26, 2005 , we collected surface, middle, and bottom water samples for chemical analysis at Stations #1, #3, and #5.  In addition, on each sampling date we collected photic zone composite samples for chlorophyll a and phytoplankton analyses.  We also collected temperature and dissolved oxygen profile data at 1 meter intervals from the surface to the bottom.  We then transported all samples to our laboratory in Marshalls Creek and analyzed them for total phosphorus, dissolved reactive phosphorus, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, nitrate/nitrite nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, total suspended solids, alkalinity (surface samples only), and pH.

A summary of the water quality data for September-October 2005 is provided in Appendix A.
