Using Constructed Wetlands to Filter
Parking Lot Pollution in Lansdale, PA

Completed Wetland - August 2004

F. X. Browne, Inc. does more than just recommend innovative stormwater management practices, we also use them!

F. X. Browne, Inc. has been a longtime advocate of installing constructed wetlands to treat stormwater runoff. In early July 2003, the firm began construction on a retrofit constructed wetland to replace a detention basin outside their Lansdale, PA office. By implementing the stormwater system on their own property, the firm hopes to educate others about the attractiveness and efficacy of such practices. The company funded the project through a $5,000 grant from the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary. F. X. Browne, Inc. contributed $3,000 of in-kind services for the design and permitting of the wetland.  The new stormwater wetland took less than two weeks to construct.

The constructed wetland system consists of native plantings and a reconstructed channel designed to slow stormwater flows. The redesigned channel slows down the water flowing through the system, providing an opportunity for the vegetation to filter out pollutants. Beginning in March 2003, the federal government began requiring municipalities to create and implement stormwater management plans. Upgrading stormwater facilities are among the ways that municipalities can fulfill their NPDES stormwater requirements.  For more information on constructed wetlands design services visit our services section.  To view the new stormwater management system, stop by the F. X. Browne, Inc. offices at 1101 South Broad Street in Lansdale or visit the photo gallery below.
